McKINNEY - The Texas Collegiate League's third annual tryout camp produced the desired results for the nine team coaches/general managers and several dozen collegians who attended at Gabe Nesbitt Field Thursday.

Some home-grown talent as well as hopefuls from throughout the Southwest region showed their skills and waited anxiously for the results of the secondary draft late in the morning.

The results were favorable for several players and teams.

The Denton Outlaws picked up Temple College 1B-3B Jonathan Farrow of Belton along with hometown favorite pitcher Mike Gunter of McKinney North High School via North Central Texas College. Gunter is bound for Angelo State on scholarship for the 2006-07 academic year and was in the first graduating class at MNHS in 2004.

Duncanville resident and Nebraska signee Mitch Abeita via North Central was selected by the Graham Roughnecks.

"The atmosphere was great," said Farrow, "and the tryout camp was pretty exciting. I'm just glad to get the chance to play in the TCL and stay fairly close to home for part of the summer."

It was at the 2004 TCL tryout camp where Sean Danielson, who played for Kansas in his undergraduate days, gained a spot on a TCL squad and later signed a free-agent contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. Danielson is in Class A baseball in the Redbords' farm system and is one of 28 TCL alumni to ink pro contracts after just two full seasons of competition.

"We are really anticipating a great season," said TCL Commissioner Darren Hall. "The fan support for each of these teams has been gaining strength, and we think this summer will be the best yet. The teams have many good promotions in place, and we have seen the interest by colleges pick up in the TCL greatly since 2004.

"I had a chance to host a booth at the 2006 American Baseball Coaches Association convention," Hall added, "and the coaches were lined up to look at some of our 'TCL Baseball Magazine' shows on FSN and tapes of the televised All-Star and Futures Games. The television exposure has been outstanding for the league."
