Keeping a close eye on the players in professional baseball with ties to the Texas Collegiate League.

Right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz (Weatherford Wranglers '05) was promoted from the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox.

Buchholz, regarded as the top pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization, appeared in 16 games for the Double-A Sea Dogs, posting a 7-2 record with an Eastern League leading 1.77 ERA. His 116 strikeouts are third in all of Minor League Baseball.

The 22-year-old participated in the 2007 MLB All-Star Futures Game in San Francisco on Sunday, July 8. Buchholz was also selected to the 2007 Eastern League All-Star Game but will not participate due to his appearance in the Futures Game.

It might appear that Buchholz was heating up at just the right time, as he was chosen the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 25-July 1, except that the Red Sox also honored him as the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May.

The Lumberton, Texas, native was selected by Boston as the 42nd overall pick in the June 2005 Draft. In 2006, he was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year after compiling an 11-4 record with a 2.42 ERA and leading all Sox farmhands with 140 strikeouts.

In the summer of 2005, Buchholz signed with the TCL’s Weatherford Wranglers and was on the roster up until MLB draft day.  Due to being drafted and signing with the Red Sox, he never got the chance to take the mound in a Wranglers uniform.
