Fireworks Extravaganza Starts Salute the Troops Weekend

Bryan-College Station, TX (July 2, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers held on to win a close one against the North Texas Copperheads 7-5 Friday night as over 1600 fans stayed long into the night for an incredible Fireworks Friday. Salute the Troops Weekend presented by the George Bush Presidential Library began in stellar fashion with the show and a much needed win for the Bombers.

Texas A&M standout Nick Fleece started for the Bombers, pitching five innings of no hit baseball, striking out seven on the night. The start was the first of the season for Fleece and a sign of good things to come for the Bombers.

The Bombers got on the board first when Brennyn Smith brought home Rodarrick Jones with an RBI single in the third to give the home team an early 1-0 lead. In the sixth Ryan Morrow scored on an RBI double by Josh McElroy, who was plated three batters later on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-0.

One inning later the floodgates opened as the Bombers added four more, one on an RBI single by Greg Olson, two more on a two RBI single by McElroy, and one on a Casey Dykes RBI single. The Bombers only held the 7-0 lead for a short time however as the Copperheads answered wit four of their own in the top of the eighth, bringing the score to 7-4.

The visitors got men to second and third with one out in the ninth, but only one was able to score as the last two batters flied out for the Copperheads to give the Bombers the 7-5 victory. With the win the Bombers move to just half a game back of the Texas Collegiate League leading Victoria Generals as they chase the First Half Title and an automatic playoff berth.

Come out to support your Bombers as they square off against the East Texas Pump Jacks tomorrow night for the last game of the first half with everything on the line.
