Bombers Win Another Nail Biter Over the Pump Jacks

Kilgore, TX (July 10, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers fell behind early, but fought back to beat the East Texas Pump Jacks 6-5. After falling behind 0-4 early, the Bombers used excellent pitching Brannon Easterling, Ryan Eastman, and Mitchell Pitts to win another one run game over the Pump Jacks.

The Pump Jacks jumped out early over the Bombers, scoring three in the third. In the fourth inning the home team added one more to open up a 0-4 lead. The Bombers continued to struggle offensively for most of the game, but finally broke a 14 inning scoreless streak in the sixth.

In the sixth, Morgan Mickan walked after a Michael Flores single to put two runners on for Greg Olson. Olson lined a ball right at the first baseman for what looked to be an easy out, but the ball trickled between his legs in a play that reminded of Bill Buckner’s famous gaff, scoring two to make the score 2-4.

The Bombers kept their foot on the gas, adding three in the seventh off of an RBI single by Mickan, an error on the right fielder, and an RBI groundout by Isaac Nuti, giving the Bombers the 5-4 lead. Tanner Toal drove in what proved to be a key RBI in the eighth when he took a pitch off the helmet with the bases loaded, extending the lead to 6-4.

The Pump Jacks fought back in the ninth, scoring one on a sacrifice fly, but left a runner on second as a foul tip strikeout ended the game, with Ryan Eastman earning the win and Mitchell Pitts getting his first save. The game was the fourth this season between the teams decided by just one run, with the Bombers holding a 3-1 season advantage.

The win moves the bombers to 18-10 on the season and gives them back a one game lead in the Texas Collegiate League standings. The team will be back in action tomorrow night against the Pump Jacks at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark on Bingo Sunday. It will be Super Hero Night at the ballpark with the Bombers honoring all Brazos Valley Fire and Police officials.
