Offense and Arms Stay Hot to Shoot Down Tomcats

Any kind of score after a 15-3 win might seem like a letdown, but in a pennant race, each win is important.

That’s why the East Texas Pump Jacks are happy with their solid 5-1 Sunday night win over the visiting Texas Tomcats.

Khris Tate earned the victory with six innings of four-hit ball, and Bryan Peters hit two doubles and crushed his first Pump Jack homer. The win improves the Jacks to 6-3 in the second half and keeps them in first place, a half-game ahead of the Brazos Valley Bombers.

A day after his biggest offensive output of the season, Alex Fuselier started off the scoring with a two-run double in the third inning. Fuselier exploded on the Alexandria Aces Saturday night, going 5-for-5 with five runs, five RBI and two home runs.

Matt Carvutto led off the third frame with the second of his three singles. Zac Fisher stroked a double down the left field line, bringing up Fuselier. The fifth pitch to the left fielder was launched into the left-center field gap, scoring both runs easily for a 2-0 lead.

Peters, who doubled in the second inning but was stranded at second base, led off the fourth frame by driving a ball deep over the left field fence. He later added another double and a stolen base in easily his best game as a Pump Jack.

The Tomcats pushed across an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning. Scott Pasket hit a sacrifice fly to score Brock Hebert, but it could have been worse had it not been for Lee Orr’s defensive heroics. Orr sprinted to his left on Pasket’s liner before making a full dive toward the line to make the catch.

Jesse Santo scored the fourth East Texas run on Carvutto’s fifth-inning single. Santo reached on a walk and advanced to third on two pitches to the backstop before crossing the plate on Carvutto’s grounder over the third baseman’s glove.

Orr facilitated the final run of the night. He took a two-out walk in the seventh inning and stole second and third base, giving him 18 swipes without being caught in 2010. Carvutto walked and danced off first base, drawing a throw. The first baseman threw to third to catch Orr straying from the bag, but the ball got away and Orr streaked home.

After Tate struck out three hitters through six innings, Chase Adams entered and K’d two in two perfect frames. Dusty Ross pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts, capped by a Brandon Wood diving catch to end the game.

The games originally scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in McKinney have been relocated to East Texas for a Tuesday twin-bill.

The resulting doubleheader will be a very special night at historic Driller Park: A free night, open to the public and supporting a good cause. The Pump Jacks request that fans attending Tuesday’s games make a donation in exchange for tickets, with all of the ticket proceeds being donated to the Boys & Girls Club. The donation can be as small as a penny for a grandstand ticket, and just $2 will be rewarded with a seat in the boxes, up close to the action! The evening is supported by the Kilgore News Herald.

Wednesday’s scheduled contest in McKinney against the North Texas Copperheads has been cancelled because of similar facility scheduling conflicts in the Metroplex.

After a day off on Thursday, the Jacks return home for a single game – and a singularly fantastic promotion: Fireworks Friday, presented by KLTV News. Once again, the Pump Jacks will light up the night sky with an incredible fireworks display, set to a new soundtrack. This is the fourth of five fireworks shows this summer, so if you haven’t seen one yet, time is running out!
