Comeback Kids Strike Again

Bryan-College Station, TX (July 21, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers won in dramatic fashion again Thursday night as they overcame a 1-3 ninth inning deficit to pull out the victory 4-3 on the back of a Morgan Mickan solo home run and a Wes Patterson walk-off single.  The win came in the first inning on Retro Night as the Bombers and McKinney Marshals played backwards baseball, starting in the ninth and finishing in the first.

The Bombers found themselves in an early hole as the Marshals scored two in the top of the first on a two out home run, giving the Marshals the 0-2 lead. It seemed as though the Bombers would respond with a big inning of their own as Greg Olson and Isaac Nuti walked and Casey Dykes singled to load the bases in the bottom of the first. Unfortunately, the Bombers only scored one in the inning on an RBI groundout by Patterson to bring the score to 1-2.

The Marshals fought back with one in the second, moving the score to 1-3 where it stood for most of the rest of the evening. Bombers’ starter Alec Mills responded by shutting down the Marshals for the rest of his outing, working seven innings. His work, along with the work of reliever Ryan Eastman kept the score close enough for the Bombers to have one more chance in the bottom of the ninth.

Mickan led off the ninth, smashing a line drive home run over the right field fence to pull the Bombers within one run at 2-3. Ryan Morrow then drew a pinch hit walk and was pinch run for by Josh McElroy. After a strikeout Greg Olson drew a walk and Isaac Nuti moved McElroy and Olson over on a groundout. The Marshals then walked Dykes to bring up Patterson with the bases loaded and two outs. The All-Star MVP flared a two-strike single over the head of the Marshals plating McElroy and Olson and giving the Bombers the 4-3 win. The dugout emptied as players tried to decide which player to run to, eventually converging around Patterson and chanting “M-V-P.”

With the win the Bombers move to 25-13 on the season and maintain their first place position in the Texas Collegiate League standings. Get out to Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark tomorrow night for Fireworks Friday as the Bombers face the Marshals again on Go Gold Night presented by Gold’s Gym.
